Our favourite things-the
Birdwatching editorial team chose their favourite products of 2007. Carol
Debney selected True to Form 'I'm
bowled over by this book, by the talent that leaps from every page and demands
that I absorb every detail. The ability to draw and paint wild creatures always
strikes me as exceptional-they are not likely to pose for their portraits-and
their essence must be captured in a brief moment. David Bennett does this
brilliantly in this book of sketches, drawings and paintings of British wildlife
and landscapes. And that's another attraction for me-the sheer 'Britishness' of
the images.
The river Welland, near my house
has a colony of Banded Demoiselles, which I spent hours trying to photograph
this summer. David's picture captures them perfectly-all shimmering, flittering
movement against the riverside plants....Kingfishers, Barn Owl, Brown Hare and
Red Grouse, this book depicts them all perfectly. Of course there are lots more:
Otters, Grey Seals, Roe Deer, Badgers, Foxes and all the birds you are likely to
see through the birdwatching year. There's also David Bennett's interesting
narrative-useful information about the wildlife and where he watched it-but the
inspirational artwork takes pride of place and will keep me enthralled for many
an hour.'

'True to Form published by
Langford Press is the latest in a beautiful series of books on wildlife art and
represents the last few years of David's travels and studies'.

'Langford Press is known for
producing quality art books...David's style is dramatic...Every illustration is
packed with movement...I particularly enjoyed his sketches and overall I warmly
inclined towards his work with mammals. If you want action there is plenty to
enjoy here.'

'In True to Form you can examine
his work in splendid detail on large format pages which reveal the rich,
colourful complexity of his paintings. David's handwritten text explains his
love of the scenes and wildlife of his home patch in North Yorkshire and other
places in the UK but it is his paintings and drawings that dominate the book.
Many of the plates are reproduced full bleed across two pages...Students of
drawing will particularly appreciate those instances when a preliminary sketch
is presented alongside a finished painting.'
